The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), based in Atlanta, Georgia, is a federal public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ATSDR protects communities from harmful health effects related to exposure to natural and man-made hazardous substances. @article{osti_, title = {Biomarkers of environmental contamination}, author = {McCarthy, J F and Shugart, L R}, abstractNote = {Biological markers are measurements at the molecular, biochemical, or cellular level in either wild populations from contaminated habitats or in organisms experimentally exposed to pollutants that indicate that the organism has been exposed to toxic chemicals.   A biomarker (short for biological marker) is an objective measure that captures what is happening in a cell or an organism at a given moment. Biomarkers help us understand relationships between environmental chemicals and human diseases to improve our ability to diagnose, monitor, or predict disease risk.

The ATSDR toxicological profile succinctly characterizes the toxicologic and adverse health effects information for the hazardous substance described here. Each peer-reviewed profile identifies and reviews the key literature that describes a hazardous substance's toxicologic properties. Other pertinent literature is also presented, but is described in less detail than the key studies.   Human monitoring as a supplement to or replacement for environmental monitoring of toxic substances in the workplace has become an increasingly important issue within the last decade, leading to Congressional hearings, governmental studies, and scientific conferences around the world. Just as the purposes for undertaking human monitoring are Reviews: 3.

The book Toxicologic Biomarkers serves as a broad reference on biomarkers of toxicology and as such is a good starting point to gain a basic understanding of the field.

The text covers everything from applicability of currently used biomarkers to methodologies being employed in development of novel markers to emerging biomarkers under consideration for toxicologic evaluations.

Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety is a multi-disciplinary journal that focuses on understanding the exposure and effects of environmental contamination on organisms including human health. The scope of the journal covers three main themes. The topics within these themes are indicated below (but are not limited to) the following.
